Project: When I asked my students to come up with a name for our Art Exhibition, the winner was “Paint Petersburg” which was truly the perfect play on words of our creative city. I instantly had an image in mind of how I wanted the poster illustration to look: a bunch of iconic St. Pete buildings being painted by none other than our mascot, Pete the Pelican.
My 30-second-sketch-in-my-note-pad turned into an incredibly detailed illustration… we’re talkin’ about 8 hours worth of work, ha! 😅
When it came time to do the banner to hang in the windows outside of our exhibition, I decided two things: 1) I’d work smarter, not harder, this year by using a projector to trace out what I’d done, and 2) I would not trace out every detail because that would be adding extra work to my plate…
The good news is I did at least the first point… but definitely did not listen to the second, and wound up still getting entirely too detailed. Oooops, hahaha. Oh well, at least filling it in with chalk went super quick! It was fun to work so large scale on this, and I am pretty proud of how the illustration for Paint Petersburg came out.
